Janelle Monae Joins Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer in NASA Drama ‘Hidden Figures’

*Janelle Monae round out the lead cast of Fox 2000’s NASA drama “Hidden Figures,” joining Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer as the three African American women who were involved in NASA’s Friendship 7 mission, which resulted in astronaut John Glenn become the first American to orbit the Earth in February 1962.

The Ted Melfi-directed film is based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s forthcoming book Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race, due in September, according to Variety.

Henson will play mathematician Katherine Henson, while Spencer and Monae will play her colleagues Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson.

“Hidden Figures” is set for release in 2017.
