*MSNBC President Phil Griffin says he had no intentions of canceling Melissa Harris-Perry’s weekend show on the network – until she wrote that infamous memo accusing the network of “taking” her show.

Addressing the network’s insistence that she take her 2-hour program in a more newsy direction under NBC News Director Andrew Lack, she wrote in the memo: “Our show was taken without comment or discussion or notice in the midst of an election season. I will not be used as a tool for their purposes. …I am not a token, mammy, or little brown bobble head. …I am not owned by Lack, Griffin or MSNBC. I love our show. I want it back.”

In an interview with NPR, Griffin said he was “surprised by the memo. We had a four year relationship with Melissa, where we created this really terrific program that we loved and that brought different voices and was a big part of the MSNBC sensibility.”
