*On Feb. 28, Prince kicked off his “Piano and a Microphone” tour at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California. Fans and reviewers have described it as an electrifying show, which went on sale a few weeks ago and sold out within minutes for two shows (7 p.m. and 10 p.m.). Prince will play his second show at the Oracle Arena in Oakland on Friday night.

Rolling Out reports that lines were wrapped around the building an hour before show time in Oakland. Prince hit the stage “sporting his signature Afro and a purple outfit,” sat at the piano and began to take concertgoers on a personal journey through his music.

“I grew up in Minnesota just wanting to be like my father,” he said as he played a riff of “I Would Die 4 U”. Prince continued: “I loved my mom, my Bible, and my music. Just like my father. … But no one should learn love from two people fighting. We need a new story. Because the old one doesn’t work anymore.”

Other hits that Prince performed included: “Purple Rain,” “Take Me With You,” “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” “Thieves in the Temple,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Diamonds & Pearls.” and “So High.” He even delivered a passionate Ray Charles cover of “Unchain My Heart.”

The seminal artist also touched on Black oppression today with “Black Muse,” where he paid homage to Kendrick Lamar by saying, “Like Kendrick says, we gonna be alright.”

San Jose Mercury News said “Prince seemed in great spirits, interacting with the fans like they were old, familiar friends. He was talkative, cheerful and playful.”

The main set lasted about an hour, but Prince blessed fans with  multiple encores. Click here to check out his full setlist.
