Theatre Co. Presents ‘In Response’ to Systemic Racism

*Hollywood – Towne Street Theatre, L.A.’s premiere African American theatre company, is proud to announce the return of their critically acclaimed production “In Response,” a multi-author “response” to systemic racism throughout American history.

This special production made its debut in the Fall of 2015 and Towne Street decided to reprise the show due to audience demand.

Entertaining, educational & informative, “In Response,” is a multi-media event told from a historical perspective through poetry, short plays, video and song.

It touches on such poignant topics as interracial relationships, slavery, lynchings, the effects of race on public perceptions, job placement, freedom, and life experiences, as well as the hope and optimism for the future of race relations in America.

Some highlights are a play about the Saturday Nighters, an anti-lynching group of writers in the 1930’s, which included Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Oswald Villard and Georgia Douglas Johnson.

Plus, a piece about Emmett Till’s murder and its effect on a small southern town; the 1960’s Black Revolution; the impact of drugs and violence in Black Communities across the country in the 1970’s and 80’s; Two Sandras – a short play that explores the striking similarities between two women of different races, who start the same journey, with tragically different outcomes.

There is the hope and impact of President Obama’s election and his subsequent leaving of office.

There will be talk backs and a call for audience responses during the run of the show at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood, Fridays through Sundays from April 8th – April 24th.

As artists of color, the company felt it had to respond to the recent numerous police shootings and violence against unarmed black men and women, including the Black Lives Matter movement, and the brutality suffered by African- Americans, beginning with slavery.

This run coincides with the 48th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr (April 4th), and the 24th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Riots. (April 29th).

As April is also National Poetry Month, Towne Street has invited a number of Spoken Word Artists to share their poetry and feelings about racism in America. A special Art Exhibit, curated by local Artist Connie Martin, will be presented in the Stella Adler/LA Art Gallery.

Community Response:

Towne Street Theatre would like to empower the community and engage with their audience on their responses on this topic, each week after the 8:00 p.m. Saturday shows and the 4:00 p.m. Sunday shows. The public is invited to share a poem, a spoken word piece, a letter, or a memory. The public can submit their ideas to [email protected].
