*J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” films may be set in a galaxy far, far away but it’s a far shorter distance for the filmmaker to possibly align with Chris Rock to work together on a television series.
The topic was one of many the two discussed and joked about in a public setting at the Tribeca Film Festival. With Rock coming off of hosting the Oscars and Abrams ruling the big screen with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and his “Star Trek” franchise, Complex notes that a collaboration on the small screen between the two would make sense.
After all, Abrams’ track record on TV includes such classics as “Alias,” “Felicity,” “Lost” and “Fringe.”
“I’m probably a single-camera show,” Rock said. “My skill set is multi-camera, but what’s gonna keep me interested, keep me intrigued, in doing 50-whatever shows is probably single camera.”
“A Louie show, a Louie kind of thing, that would be amazing for you,” Abrams suggested while referencing the popular FX show featuring comedian Louis C.K.
As the conversation continued, things shifted to “Star Wars.” With the recent release of “The Force Awakens” video and incredible box office numbers, the film series is in high gear as the Rian Johnson-helmed “Episode VIII” is currently in development.
Upon speaking about the larger than life “Star Wars” fan base and “Star Trek,” Abrams field a humorous suggestion from Rock about a certain Marvel Comics super team he would like him to tackle.
“Could you direct Fantastic Four?” Rock asked. “I love the Fantastic Four, and they keep f—ing it up.”
While it may be a long shot, the notion of Abrams taking on the iconic comic book group would be interesting, considering the last “Fantastic Four” film, which was released last year, was not a hit with critics nor moviegoers who abandoned it at the box office.
Fielding a question from an audience member who asked about “The Force Awakens’” leading character Rey, who was played by Daisey Ridley, Abrams spoke on young warrior’s mysterious past, which has folks wondering if the upcoming “Star Wars” stand-alone film “Rogue One,” will shed light on Rey’s past.
Despite being an executive producer on “Rogue One,” Abrams had nothing much to say on the upcoming adventure, which is set to hit theaters on Dec. 16.
“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII, so I can’t possibly in this moment tell you who they are,” Abrams said in what many perceived to be a big clue about the identity of Rey’s parents. “But this is all I will say: It is something that Rey thinks about, too.”
Abrams later clarified his comments about Rey, telling Entertainment Weekly, “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world,”
As for who they would like to work with, Rock touched on his ideal projects and revealed that he would love to direct Denzel Washington in a comedy.
