*N.W.A. may be on its way to being officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hours from now on Friday (04-08-16), but don’t look for a performance from the World’s Most Dangerous Group.
Breaking the news to The New York Times, Ice Cube revealed why the members of N.W.A. won’t be crowing their induction with spitting their game-changing rhymes live on stage, Vibe reports.
“I guess we really didn’t feel like we were supported enough to do the best show we could put on,” he said. “We wanted to do it on a whole other level, and that just couldn’t happen. But we’re totally honored, humbled and appreciative to the Hall for even just considering us, inducting us and inviting us.”
While Cube’s comments come as a disappointment to fans, it doesn’t take away the fact that N.W.A. will join their hip-hop brethren Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Nevertheless, KISS bassist/singer Gene Simmons sees things a bit different as he expressed that the Hall of Fame should only be reserved for folk who play the guitar or sing.
Weighing in on Simmons’ view, Cube disagreed and broke down what rock ‘n’ roll truly is.
“…rock ‘n’ roll is not an instrument and it’s not singing,” the rapper-actor-director said. “Rock ‘n’ roll is a spirit. N.W.A is probably more rock ‘n’ roll than a lot of the people that he thinks belong there over hip-hop. We had the same spirit as punk rock, the same as the blues.”
The 31st annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to take place tonight at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and will be televised on HBO on April 30.
