*In cities across the country, folks are trying to find answers to the problem of youth violence. While many people look to city hall, the police department or churches for the solution, most neglect their community’s most valuable resource; the barber shop.

Inspired by the soon to be released movie “Barbershop 3: The Next Cut,” Durham NC activist Minister Paul Scott, founder of the Messianic Afrikan Nation is proclaiming the weekend of April 15th (to coincide with the movie release date) “National Black Barbershop Weekend” (Cut Out the Violence and Shape Up the Hood).

The film, centers around a barber who comes back to his community to find it plagued by drive by’s and other sorts of violence, much like Scott’s hometown of Durham NC which had 42 murders in 2015 and is on track to surpass that number this year.

“While there is a church on every corner in the ‘hood , there are two barber shops,” says Scott. ” And the kid who will never set foot in a church will go to the barber shop once a week, religiously.

Scott is urging barbers across the country to take part in the campaign by not only turning their barbershops into “safe zones” as is done in Barbershop 3 but also empowerment zones to educate their patrons about health, voter registration, employment and other issues facing the black community.

Like they said in the movie, “Nobody is gonna save us but us, ” says Scott.
