*An autopsy was completed Friday on the body of Prince Rogers Nelson, one day after he was pronounced dead at the age of 57. However, a full report of the results, including toxicology, could “likely take weeks.”
The chief medical examiner for Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the music icon to determine the cause of death. The autopsy began at 9 a.m. CDT on Friday (April 22) and was completed at 1 p.m., a press release from the medical examiner’s office said. The release added that the singer’s body would be returned to his family later today.
“As part of a complete exam, relevant information regarding Mr. Nelson’s medical and social history will be gathered. Anything which could be relevant to the investigation will be taken into consideration,” an earlier press release from the medical examiner’s office said.
The office stated results would not be made public until all exams are “complete and all results are obtained. Gathering the results will take several days and the results of a full toxicology scan could likely take weeks.”
Prince was found dead Thursday in the elevator of his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minn.
Deputies and medical personnel found the 57-year-old music icon unresponsive when they arrived at his home, and they performed CPR but it was unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. local time.
