*As Prince fans around the world continue mourning the legendary singer, the city of Los Angeles is making time to honor his memory and legacy with a public memorial.
According to The Los Angeles Times the event, organized by the local activist Najee Ali, will kick off at 5 p.m. May 6 at Los Angeles City Hall. Although a spokeswoman for Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed that Los Angeles 8th District City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson is sponsoring the memorial, it wasn’t immediately clear if public money would be sued.
“Los Angeles was Prince’s second home. He spent a lot of time here,” Ali told the Times. “It’s not a time to mourn but a time to pay tribute to his legacy. We’re expecting a big party on the grass next Friday.”
Ali adds that organizers are reaching out to musicians that collaborated with Prince over the years under the hope they may perform for the event.
News of the public memorial comes a week after Prince died on April 21. Since his passing, tributes have been held around the country, particularly at City Hall and municipal buildings, which have been illuminated in purple to honor the music icon
“Our very own City Hall was the prime location for the ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ video,” the Facebook announcement for the upcoming memorial reads. “The City of Los Angeles is proud to have been the home away from home for a tremendous talent that touched our city and our world.”
Weighing in on Prince’s death last week, Garcetti issued a statement praising the entertainer and his impact.
“Prince was a once-in-a-generation talent,” Garcetti expressed in the statement. “His genius on stage, and in the studio, was matched only by his determination to protect the integrity of his art and defend the rights of artists to control what they create.”
As LA prepares its public memorial, more revelations surface about Prince and his private going-ons.
TMZ cites folks who worked with the vocalist who reveal that the entertainer’s finances were “always in shambles.”
The site explained that Prince’s feelings about being “screwed over” by deals he signed in his younger years made it impossible to get him to sign any legal document in the five years leading up to his recent death.
“Prince was so distrusting … he jumped from lawyer to lawyer almost every year, and sometimes more often,” TMZ shared. “One professional who worked with the singer tells us, Prince called him out of the blue one day and said he wanted to hire him. The professional asked Prince for his business files, and the answer was, ‘I don’t know, they’re out there somewhere.’ The professional never got the files. “
The site goes on to state that despite hiring and firing various professionals, Prince’s most trusted advisers were “beautiful, 20-something women, all models with no experience in anything.”
If true, it may have looked good, but it ended up causing making things chaotic in Prince’s life … especially in the financial department.
