A Royal Symphony Concert is Presented in L.A.

* A Royal Symphony – If Beethoven’s Ninth Choral Symphony is one of your favorites, you will certainly enjoy Queen Elizabeth’s II’s “New Nation Rising Symphony” by Dr. Shirley Thompson and other exciting compositions at “ A Royal Symphony ” Concert presented by the Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra (AACMSO) on Sunday, April 24, 2016, 6 p.m., at the Wilshire United Methodist Church.

Dr. Thompson has composed several works for Queen Elizabeth including beautiful pieces for her 2002 Golden Jubilee Celebration portraying the history of England.

She is thrilled to participate in Brit Week with this local performance.

Joining AACMSO to perform this brilliant work is the Azusa Pacific Gospel Choir. Letitia Ugwueke along with opera singers Gertrude Bradley, Sheila Judson and Perry Hayes will join the Afro-American Chamber Orchestra and Maestro Janise White.

AACMSO will also present a World Premiere of the Cape Coast Castle Symphony by New York composer, Dr. Joyce Solomon Moorman, depicting “The Door of No Return” and “The Door of Return” inspired by a recent tour of the slave holding castle in Ghana.

Other works include “Jazz Concertino” by Dr. Joyce Solomon Moorman featuring jazz flutist David Crawford and “Odyssey Viola Concerto” by Dr. Shirley Thompson featuring violist

To add to the creative ambiance, L.A. Performing Arts students will exhibit their art as part of the Cape Coast Castle Exhibit. Joan Carl, sculptor, and Tiffany Allen of the Honeywood Foundation will serve as judges.

About the Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra (AACMSO)

AACMSO was founded in 1988 by Professors Janise White, pianist; Valencia Mitchelffl, violinist; Kevan Torfeh, cellist, Patrick Morgan, violinist; as well as others who played integral parts in the group’s inception.

AACMSO has is dedicated to the preservation and performance of music by symphonists of the African diaspora. The group has revived and premiered works by over 200 composers.

AACMSO is listed in the Bibliography of Black Composers by Dr. Rene de Lerma; Brass Music of Black Composers by Aaron Horne; and the International Dictionary of Black Composers by Samuel Floyd, Jr.

Most recently, AACMSO’s ‘Sancho’ CD was featured in the West Africa Exhibit at the British Library and has been added to the repository.

About Janise White, Conductor

Noted scholar and pianist, Professor White serves as Music Professor at West Los Angeles College (WLAC) in Culver City.

Professor Emeritus held tenure at WLAC from 1997-2016; Adjunct L.A. Southwest College from 1993 to 1999.

She holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (Bachelor of Music), University of Southern California (Master of Music), and California State University, Hayward (Choral Credential and Bachelor of Music Education).

White studied conducting with the late Denis de Coteau.

She is mentioned in American Black Women in the Arts and Social Sciences:  A Bibliographic Survey by Dr. Ora Williams; “African American Music, A Chronology by Dr. Hansonia Caldwell, Black Music Research Journal by Samuel Floyd, The Magic of Music by Leroy Hurte, Bibliography of Black Music and the Greenwood Encyclopedia by Dr. Dominique Rene de-Lerma.

EDS: Composer Interviews with begin at 5 p.m. followed by the Symphony Concert at 6 p.m.

Dr. Shirley Thompson will participate via Skype at 5 p.m.
