Kanye West: Tidal’s Latest Problem?

Kanye West*To help promote the dying streaming service Tidal, Kanye West told the world that his new album “The Life of Pablo” would only and always be available exclusively on Tidal, prompting thousands of fans to subscribe to the app for a first-listen.

As of today (04-20-16), you can buy the album from Kanye’s website, or stream the album on Spotify and Apple Music.

And on Monday, April 18, disgruntled fan Justin Baker-Rhett filed a potential class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. Baker-Rhett probably should have known better than to take anything Kanye said on Twitter at face value, but to be fair the artist did tweet in February, “My album will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale… You can only get it on Tidal.”

“We fully support the right of artists to express themselves freely and creatively, however creative freedom is not a license to mislead the public,” attorney Jay Edelson told the Associated Press. “We believe that we will be able to prove to a jury that Mr. West and Tidal tricked millions of people into subscribing to their services and that they will ultimately be held accountable for what they did.”

Although it’s really, really hard to feel sorry for the man married to Beyoncé, Tidal is a rare miss for its founder, rapper Jay-Z. About 57% of companies say employee retention is a serious problem, yet no doubt Jay-Z expected Kanye to stay loyal to Tidal for longer than 60 days.

Remember when Jay-Z launched his “revolutionary” new streaming app Tidal in a truly bananas press conference? Jay-Z trotted out a who’s-who of his famous friends, including Queen Bey, Nicki Minaj, Kanye, Usher, Rihanna, Daft Punk, and some token white indie musicians. Yet for all that hype, Tidal flopped, and hard.

No one can agree on just how many people signed up for Tidal to stream Kanye’s album. Tidal reported that the album was streamed 250 million times in its debut week, a figure which some analysts said was mathematically impossible. Still, there’s no doubt Kanye’s “The Life of Pablo” gave Tidal a much needed boost, at least for a little while.
