*Dwayne Johnson revealed Monday that he’ll team with director Shane Black to bring the pulp magazine character Doc Savage to the big screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has been in development at Sony since 2013, when Black was set to co-write and direct a Doc Savage adaptation after working on the script for several years. Sony had billed the title as a franchise starter.
On social media Monday, Johnson wrote that he had met with screenwriters Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry over the weekend “to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project.”
Johnson also will produce through his Seven Bucks Productions banner along with Hiram Garcia. Neal H. Moritz (who worked with Johnson on some of the Fast & Furious movies), Ori Marmur and Michael Uslan also are producing. F.J. DeSanto is co-producing.
In the meantime, Johnson will arrive in theaters June 17 opposite Kevin Hart in the action comedy “Central Intelligence.” The actor also stars in the adaptation of “Baywatch” and next summer’s “Fast 8.” He also has a “San Andreas” sequel in the works and has signed on for the remake of “Jumanji.”
