*Fox Searchlight has just released a new “living poster” for Nate Parker’s “The Birth of a Nation,” the most buzzed about movie out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The title borrows from D.W. Griffith’s racist 1915 film “Birth of a Nation” (originally titled “The Clansman”) and rebrands it as a biopic of Nat Turner, who led a Virginian slave uprising in 1831.
The “living poster” is a twist on the usual movie poster. The video begins with a red sketch of Turner (Parker) from the film. The camera pulls out and we see him leading his fellow slaves. “Brothers, we’ve been chosen,” he says in voice over. “The Lord has spoken to me: visions of what’s to come. A rise of good against evil. The first shall be last, the last shall be first. Stand with us. Stand with us.”
The camera continues to pan out, eventually showing multiple rows of red-sketched rebels standing beside him …formed into the stripes of the American flag.
