*The season finale of “Empire” on Wednesday had some heavy competition from Steph Curry during its 9 p.m. EST timeslot, which may have contributed to the double digit drop in ratings compared to last year’s season finale.
While easily the night’s highest rated and most watched program, (up 8% from last week and earning its best demo results since April 6), last night’s “Empire” episode fell 38% in adults 18-49 from its Season 1 finale, according to Deadline.
Those numbers follow an 18-episode second season that saw a considerable drop in ratings overall, with a more than three-month break that split season 2 in half. In this light, it’s understandable that the Lee Daniels and Danny Strong drama would not match the all-time ratings high of its March 18, 2015 Season 1 finale, a two-hour affair that drew 16.7 million viewers overall. By comparison, season 2 wrapped last night with just 10.8 million.
