*Last night’s big Tony Awards winner “Hamilton” may have fallen just shy of the record for number of trophies collected, but the musical created by Lin-Manuel Miranda still contributed to a historic feat at the ceremony.
For the first time ever, all four musical acting awards went to people of color: Leslie Odom Jr. for “Hamilton,” Cynthia Erivo for “The Color Purple,” Daveed Diggs for “Hamilton,” and Renée Elise Goldsberry for “Hamilton.”

Tonys host James Corden said it best in his opening monologue, describing the show as “the Oscars, but with diversity.”
“Hamilton” had 16 nominations and, in addition to taking three of the four acting awards, also nabbed best musical, best score, best book, direction, orchestration and choreography.
In addition to Erivo’s best actress win, “The Color Purple” also took home the big one: best revival of a musical.
