*Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly began crying Tuesday as she spoke about the endless, systemic violence happening in her Chicago district.

“I’m so relentless on this issue because moments of silence in Congress just aren’t going to cut it anymore,” Kelly said during a luncheon Tuesday at the Standard Club. “I don’t even stand for moments of silence, I haven’t stood for a year because my colleagues just stand up, they sit down and we do nothing. I believe in honoring the victims of gun violence through action.”

She apologized for her tears, saying it’s been a “rough week.”

Seven people were killed and 32 wounded across Chicago last weekend alone. On Monday night (June 6), a 6-year-old girl was shot in the back and critically wounded while sitting in front of a home in the Palmer Square neighborhood. A vehicle drove up and someone in it began firing. She was taken to Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in critical condition and was stabilized enough to wake up and grab her father’s hand, the girl’s aunt told WGN-TV.

Rep. Kelly said she comes from a family of police officers and hunters and that she’s not anti-gun, but called the gun violence in the U.S. a public health epidemic.
