Lil’ Kim’s Big Transformation Sparks Controversy

Lil-Kim-Blond-Hair*A lot of folks are talking about Lil’ Kim’s big transformation. The 41-year-old rapper posted a photo collage on Instagram last month, leaving fans shocked and confused by her appearance.

In fact, fans and medical experts alike say Kim looked completely unrecognizable with very pale skin, long blonde hair, and enhanced cheeks.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Levine commented on the celebrity’s new look to US Weekly, saying, “It’s clear that there has been some skin bleaching. She’s probably used chemicals, which contain very high doses of acids, on her face, combined with high-acid creams to lighten her skin.”

Dr. Levine also suspects that Kim had her eyes altered as well. She said, “They seem elongated and completely different. Kim would have had to have surgery to remove the fat, skin and tissue to create this new eye shape.”

Kim is not the first — and certainly will not be the last — celebrity to give Botox a try. Many women between the ages of 40 and 59 receive Botox injections, especially those in the media’s limelight. Plastic surgery has become so common among celebrities that it usually doesn’t even cause a stir, yet Kim’s transformation is different.

Mostly, critics are disapproving of the African-American celebrity’s shift in appearance towards a more “mainstream” beauty standard — as in, one that celebrates “whiteness.” Namely, it’s her lighter skin and blonde hair that is dousing the makeover in controversy.

Lil’ Kim has gone through several transformations during her career, which has spanned several decades. However, none of her looks have sparked the level controversy caused by the most recent Instagram reveal.

Critics are denouncing the rap star, accusing her of self-hatred, and accusing society at large of perpetuating a racially discriminatory beauty standard that rejects the notion that “black is beautiful.”

Despite the recent backlash, Lil’ Kim is slated to go on tour with fellow hip hop and RandB stars Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, and Faith Evans, along with Bad Boy Records founder Sean Combs (who alternates between his Puff Daddy, Puffy, P. Diddy and Diddy stage names). The reunion tour will take place between August 25 and October 8 this year.
