NeNe Leakes, star of “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” gets major kudos for talking openly about her recent nose job on “Watch What Happens Live.”

In a culture of plastic-surgery denial where few celebrities discuss the work they have had done, Leakes was unabashed about sharing with host Andy Cohen.

“I got my nose done because, first of all, I can. I will. And I’ll get it done again if I want to. OK?” Leakes said on air.

In fact, Leakes had a medical reason for getting her nose done: “My cartilage was growing in my nose, my tip was touching the top of my lip, ” she said, noting that she had had the procedure done six years ago as well.

Karla Ivankovich, PhD, an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois, Springfield, spoke with Yahoo Beauty and said that such procedures could sometimes have a negative effect on an individual, despite attempts at a positive outcome.

Yet Ivankovich was certain about one thing: open discussion of the topic should be embraced in Hollywood. “Hiding it is certainly not productive,” she said. “You can choose to identify that you wish not to discuss it, or that you are choosing to keep your personal life personal — but to outright deny it is somewhat silly, especially in light of the media’s scrutiny of every individual. If you are a celebrity, you can expect that there is a significant amount of lost privacy; it goes with the territory…. Celebrities have fans. Those fans recognize change in their celebrity immediately.”

The landscape of health and body image is changing rapidly. For instance, 89% of healthcare executives said that they expect telemedicine to transform the U.S. healthcare system in the next decade. Celebrities, who hold the public eye and have significant sway when it comes to trends, fashion, and behavior, could have a big part in influencing this next chapter in public health.
