*The first Annual Los Angeles Soul Music Festival kicks off this weekend with live performances at the Autry in Griffith Park. Notable musicians to hit the stage include Eric Benet, Marsha Ambrosius, Melanie Fiona, Angie Stone, Jazmine Sullivan and Lyfe Jennings.

EURweb’s Lee Bailey caught up with Jennings via phone to discuss the show, his recent town hall meeting drama with David Banner and his future music projects. The 38 year-old R&B and soul singer called in from Miami, FL where he was vacationing.

“I needed a vacation so I came out here to see some sun and some legs,” he laughed.

Jennings will specifically be performing Sunday and sounded excited about coming to LA. He said attendees could expect to hear him perform his hit songs in addition to new tracks and unreleased music. He also explained that his music would be clean and the show would be family oriented.

“I’m a message based singer so why limit the amount of people that can receive your message by not filtering out something that can might be offensive,” he said. “I can’t say I’ve always been like that. I think it’s just a growing process through me having children and having to protect them from certain things.”

The musician also spoke on the controversy between him and David Banner that went viral during a Town Hall meeting hosted by Rickey Smiley. Things got heated between Banner and Jennings when they had disagreements about the proper course of action when dealing with the police. Banner suggested that young black men should carry guns and fight back which upset Jennings. The two yelled back in forth until Tyrese Gibson (who was also at the town hall meeting) jumped in the middle and broke it up.

“I just think if you know, you do anything that you’re in the public eye, I think you have a responsibility to at the very least give correct information,” he said. “It’s a responsibility that we have to give to these children the lives we would want our children to have. I just thought it was irresponsible to tell these young black men to carry guns with them, which is illegal.”

Jennings assured us that there’s nothing physical between him and Banner now or then. Though he’s getting backlash in the community about it as they call him a “sell out and “scared” he stands by his point of view.

“I think I’m a grown man and therefore I value grown opinions and that’s the bottom line I’m not against anybody or anything when they have their opinions,” he said.

The singer told us that other than his own music, he listens to older musicians such as Anita Baker and Tyrese. He did tell us he is a huge Rihanna and Chris Brown fan though.

“I think that musically stuff is watered down and going in the wrong direction. I’m a fan of old R&B,” said Jennings. “As far as new guys there’s not really anybody in there that I’m impressed about.”

In regards to his own music he told us that he’s just being patient with everything and letting the music come naturally. He put emphasis on not wanting to write a song just for radio but making a great 12-15 song project that the fans can appreciate.
