‘Star Trek Beyond’ is Not Chuck D’s First Alien Connection

Star Trek Beyond” is not the first alien connection for rapper Chuck D and Public Enemy. “Fight the Power,” so apropos for the times, is playing inside Jaylah’s (Sofia Boutella) space ship centuries into the future. In “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” young John Connor (Edward Furlong) wears a Public Enemy T-shirt. “Star Trek” has always fought to eradicate prejudice with its poignant themes about inclusion.

In “Star Trek Beyond,” the crew – although separated and their ship destroyed – must save the Federation and the many lives that depend on them. “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin keeps the pace fast and furious, while letting the humor and humanity shine through. An exciting scene, among the many, is seeing Uhura (Zoe Saldana) go toe to toe with Krall (Idris Elba). And, you walk away singing Rihanna’s “Sledgehammer.”

‘Ice Age: Collision Course’

Scrat is back and the universe is not better for it. He causes a cosmic catastrophe in “Ice Age: Collision Course” that sends a meteor hurtling towards earth. Manny (Ray Romano) and wife Ellie (Queen Latifah) are facing some earth shattering news of their own about Peaches (Keke Palmer) and Julian (Adam Devine).

Director Michael Thurmeier wanted a new environment for the herd to explore and that just upped the ante for theatergoers because young and old will enjoy all the species—another lesson in diversity and living together—trek to safer terrains.

‘Lights Out’

Be afraid! Be very afraid! Walked into the screening of “Lights Out” thinking I would be bored and annoyed knowing that for the most part they rarely get paranormal and horror films right these days. After a few scary, jarring jumps not even half way through the movie, I realized I had been wrong.

Being invited to a morning screening, I left the theater grateful it was still quite sunny outside. This is not the type of movie you want to find yourself in the dark after seeing it. Some are already afraid of the dark and this film reinforces those fears.

A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to a mother (Maria Bello), threatens her daughter Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) and son Martin (Gabriel Bateman)—or anyone who gets in its way. The “Conjurer” producer James Wan is behind this, and David Sandberg directs.
