To celebrate the release of “Star Trek Beyond” opening July 22nd and the 50th anniversary of “Star Trek,” I was invited to tour the newly integrated and dazzling “Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience” exhibition at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City when it opened July 9th.

Star Trek’s thought–provoking storytelling imagined a better future for humanity while commenting on social issues. It is a known fact that when Nichelle Nichols thought about leaving “Star Trek,” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King told her how important her role was as Lt. Uhura and she stayed.

Not only did the franchise boldly go in terms of plot, Star Trek inspired generations of tinkerers, inventors and explorers to push the boundaries of modern science and make science fiction into fact.

Visitors (Cadets) will attend the Academy’s Career Day—in the 26th century and, after student orientation, visit nine zones focused on the training center’s specialties: Language, Medical, Navigation, Engineering, Command and Science. Cadets then will be assigned a specialty and a demeanor based on their individual training.

Fans will recognize many of the “Star Trek” props and costumes that will be on display. There will also be interactive activities and unique technology, including Leap Motion, voice recognition to communicate with a Klingon, a Medical Tricorder table with RFID sensors, planet projection mapping, holograms, a shooting game using “Star Trek”’s iconic phasers, and much more. Visitors also will have a chance to learn about the real-life inventions inspired by “Star Trek” as well as the science behind them. www.intrepidmuseum.org/Startrek

And yes, there is a transporter room where visitors can be beamed up to a designated location.
