What Bankruptcy? A New Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles Under Construction in LA

Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles*A new Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles restaurant will soon open at La Brea and Washington, in Los Angeles. The soul food-focused eatery has several locations in and around the area, but the chain’s existing Mid-City location on Pico Boulevard, is going to close, says a Roscoe’s rep.

Roscoe’s currently has seven locations — 5 in Los Angeles County and 2 in Orange County. The menu is known for its fried chicken and waffle dishes, including one named after President Obama, which includes one waffle, three pieces of chicken and a side of syrup.

The Roscoe’s rep tells Eater that the chain plans to move into the new spot once construction is complete. That’s expected to be sometime in early 2017. According to Curbed, staff will have more room to cook at the new location.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, considered to be one of the most popular restaurants in all of Southern California, is also opening a location at San Diego’s Barrio Logan district. The restaurant will open in the next few months at the corner of National Avenue and Sigsbee Street.

All this comes on the heels of a messy bankruptcy declaration back in March. According to several reports, the company officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after losing a racial discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuit last year in the amount of $3.2 million dollars.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles was first founded in 1975 in Long Beach, California, by Harlem native Herb Hudson. The Los Angeles Times refers to the spot as “such an L.A. institution that people don’t even question the strange combo anymore.”

The New York Times refers to it as a “beloved soul food chain.” The original location in Hollywood remains popular with celebrities. The chain is often referred to and featured in popular media (pop/hip hop/R&B recordings, movies, TV shows, articles, etc.).
