What Beef? Drake Welcomes Eminem Onstage at Detroit Show

*Drake surprised his Detroit audience at a concert earlier this week by welcoming 8-Mile native Eminem onto the stage. The two shared on Drake’s song “Forever” towards the end of his two-and-a-half hour set at the Joe Louis Arena.

“Detroit, make some noise for the greatest rapper that ever get on a mother—ing microphone,” Drake urged the crowd, not that they needed much prodding. The screams were deafening as soon as the audience saw the real Slim Shady rising up from below the stage.

In turn, Eminem appeared grateful and almost humble.

“It’s an honor to share the stage with this man right here,” he said, adding at the end of the song: “Detroit, I love you. I’m out.”

The co-appearance also served to quash rumors of a beef between the two rappers, fueled by suggestions that Eminem was preparing a Drake diss track. Internet shade has been thrown around lately between Drake and Eminem’s labelmate, Joe Budden. But clearly, there’s no bad blood here.

Tuesday night’s show marked the first time Eminem has appeared on a Detroit stage since last November, when he joined in on a performance of “Detroit vs. Everybody” at a Big Sean concert, also at Joe Louis Arena.

For Drizzy, it’s his second appearance in the area in as many weeks, both as stops for his Summer Sixteen tour. Both sets were littered with past hits as well as tracks from his most recent release Views, including “Hotline Bling,” where the rapper/singer laments about the girl who used to call him on his cell phone. Luckily, the average lifespan of a phone is only two years, giving the song’s narrator the chance to get a new number. After all, what better come back is there than “new number who’s this?”

The Toronto native showed equal love and appreciation for the history of Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, which is set to close next year once the new Red Wings’ Little Caesar Arena opens its doors.

“It’s one of the last concerts in this building,” Drake told his fans, “so we’ve got to make it as special as we can.”
