*Nia Long and Tony winner Idina Menzel will topline Lifetime’s upcoming remake of the 1988 tear-jerker “Beaches,” with Long stepping into the Barbra Hershey role of Hillary, while Menzel will play Bette Midler’s CC.

The telepic follows the serendipitous meeting of two youngsters on the Venice Boardwalk, who, though worlds apart in lifestyle, embark on an unexpected and lifelong friendship.

CC is an aspiring singer trying to make it in Los Angeles until she’s discovered by a director who gives CC her first big shot. Hillary is the daughter of a prominent civil rights lawyer who struggles to find her own destiny. Their friendship — even with its ups and downs — sustains them for decades.

Lifetime’s version is currently in production in Vancouver, reports Variety. Allison Anders directs from a script by Bart Barker and Nikole Beckwith. The movie is produced by A+E Studios and will premiere on Lifetime in 2017.

Long was most recently seen in ABC’s “Uncle Buck” and the film “Keanu,” which starred Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
