That was the score Simone Biles earned through four rotations to win the women’s individual all-around gold medal Thursday at the Rio Games and cement her title as the most dominant gymnast of our time.
Her teammate, Aly Raisman, earned the Silver medal with a score of 60.098, while liya Mustafina of Russia won bronze.
Biles joins Mary Lou Retton, Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin and Gabby Douglas as the only American women in history to win gold medals in all-around.
Here’s how it all went down:
Biles and Raisman went one-two on vaults to start the competition; but Biles slipped to second place after their next rotation, the uneven bars. Mustafina, the 2012 champion on bars, slid into first with Raisman dropping to fourth.
Next was the balance beam. Biles wobbled a bit, but stuck her landing and moved back into first place, with Mustafa in second and Raisman inching up to third.
And then…the floor exercise.
Biles slayed. You know her routine by now — a full-twisting double layout to start out, followed by “The Biles” (a double layout with a half twist), followed by a stag leap, and two more passes. Biles cried as she left the floor, as did her coach Aimee Boorman. Her floor score, 15.933, was the highest of the day across all four rotations.
Raisman was nearly flawless on her floor exercise as well, and did enough to snatch second place from Mustafine.
