‘Sesame Street’ Apologizes for ‘Misunderstandings’ Over Aging Out Faves

Bob McGrath, Emilio Delgado and Roscoe Orman

*It looks like Sesame Street was not prepared for the social media outrage it received over dismissing veteran cast members Bob McGrath, Emilio Delgado and Roscoe Orman after 40 years on the children’s series, and are now calling the whole thing a “misunderstanding.”

Last week, folks of a particular age went nuts over word that “Sesame Street” was retiring singer/music teacher Bob, handyman Luis (Delgado) and schoolteacher Gordon (Orman).

On Tuesday (Aug 2), the CEO of the nonprofit behind “Sesame Street” posted a Facebook message apologizing for “the misunderstandings around the changing cast roles at Sesame Street,” and hinted that we might not have seen the last of them after all.

“I have been in touch with each of them to meet in person about how we best adapt their talents to the current content needs and preschool media landscape, in a way that honors their historic contributions,” wrote Sesame Workshop CEO Jeff Dunn in the post.

Meanwhile, Loretta Long, who has played Susan for Sesame Street‘s entire run, will continue on the series, and Sonia Manzano, who had played Maria on the show since 1971, retired last year.
