“Suicide Squad” is awesome and I haven’t had that much fun at a screening since “Deadpool.” One of the draws of this amazing film is its diverse cast. Writer/director David Ayers was asked at the press day for “Suicide Squad” in New York City if it was a conscious effort to show what America really looks like onscreen?
“For me,” Ayer said, “I grew up in South L.A., in a really diverse neighborhood. I was the only white boy. That’s how diverse it was [Laughs].
“ It’s the world I know. It’s the world I live in. It’s also the world we all live in. I feel like onscreen, the kids need to see people that look like them. My wife is Latina. My kids are Latino so it’s important for them to see faces like theirs on the screen.
“It’s a global business these days and we need to evolve with the times. It comes naturally to me but I think in diversity is strength, and we need to be a lot more inclusive in film. We really need to work on that and in our world in general.”
