Colin Kaepernick*The San Francisco 49ers confirmed that quarterback Colin Kaepernick made the final roster after the team cut a total of 20 players.

Despite the recent controversy surrounding him, Kaepernick made the cut and coach Chip Kelly said the decision was made purely from a football perspective. The 20 other players cut from the team included rookie quarterback Jeff Driskel.

Kaepernick’s decision to protest the national anthem has become a hot topic in America.

“There’s a lot of things that need to change,” Kaepernick said on Aug. 28. “One specifically? Police brutality. There’s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. People are being given paid leave for killing people. That’s not right. That’s not right by anyone’s standards.”

As CBS.com notes, Kaepernick’s efforts are even supported by President Barack Obama, who briefly spoke about it while giving a speech in China.

“I don’t doubt his sincerity,” he said. “I think he cares about some real, legitimate issues that have to be talked about. If nothing else, he’s generated more conversation about issues that have to be talked about.”
