Eddie Murphy Says He Might Return To Stand-Up Comedy

Eddie Murphy on Jimmy Kimmel*Eddie Murphy dropped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Friday to promote his upcoming film “Mr. Church,” and during their conversation, the comedian confessed that he may return to stand-up comedy. Kimmel also praised Murphy’s Mark Twain Prize acceptance speech, an appearance that left fans salivating for the star’s return to the stage.

When asked whether he might hit the comedy stage for the first time in decades, Murphy replied, “I might.”

“You got to go back to the clubs and work out, do all that stuff,” Murphy said of the arduous regimen needed to do stand-up. “I haven’t done it in so long and I’m curious now – so much has changed – to what would even come out. I don’t even know what that would be like.”

Also during the interview, Eddie talked about how he started doing stand-up at the age of 15.

In “Mr. Church,” Eddie’s dramatic role “tells the story of a unique friendship that develops when a little girl and her dying mother retain the services of a talented cook – Henry Joseph Church. What begins as a six month arrangement instead spans into fifteen years and creates a family bond that lasts forever,” per IMDB.com.

A review of the film over on avclub.com notes that, “A small, unflashy, borderline incompetent movie like Mr. Church is certainly another sign that Murphy does what he wants. Maybe this guarded performance in a lousy movie is a sign of him wanting to do something better.”

Murphy’s sit-down with Kimmel also included the comedian’s love of “Good Times,” his Bill Cosby impression and how he cries at the movies. He even jokes about how he doesn’t own anymore trademark leather suits, so that may be a hindrance in his return to stand-up. Kimmel promises Murphy, “We can get you a leather suit.”
