Jerry Rice Has Change of Heart Over Colin Kaepernick’s Protest

Jerry Rice*Jerry Rice has changed his mind about Colin Kaepernick’s protest against racial injustice and police murdering black folks. After criticizing Kaepernick last month for disrespecting the flag, former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Rice tweeted on Tuesday that he has reversed his stance.

Just last month, he took to Twitter to tell Kaepernick: “don’t disrespect the flag,” in a response to his decision against not standing while the national anthem is played prior to games.

Comedian D.L. Hugely called him out over it over his comments, and Rice has maintained that he’s not anti-Kaepernick, just pro-anthem. But in a recent tweet, he acknowledged how he understands why Kaepernick has decided to take a knee rather than stand.

“I support @Kaepernick7 for bringing awareness for injustice !!! As Americans we all have rights! Im hoping we all come together#solution,” Rice wrote. Jerry — who spent 16 of his 20 NFL seasons in San Francisco – didn’t explain his change of heart.

Meanwhile, Kaepernick told reporters on Tuesday that he has received death threats in the weeks since he began his national anthem protest.

Kaepernick set off a firestorm after he sat during “The Star-Spangled Banner” before a preseason game on Aug. 26. His protest has sparked a trend among athletes around the world.

“If something like that were to happen, you’ve proved my point,” Kaepernick said in reference to the death threats he’s been receiving. “It’ll be loud and clear why it happened.”

Kaepernick said he knew there would be issues when he started his protest, so death threats are “not something I haven’t thought about.”

It’s ridiculous that someone protesting peacefully, even during the national anthem, would even need to worry about death threats. But we were reminded why Kaepernick is protesting, when Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man, was shot with a stun gun by a male officer and then shot and killed by a female officer in Tulsa, Okla.

“They shot and killed a man and walked around like it wasn’t a human being,” Kapernick told the San Francisco Chronicle. “People are being killed and not even being treated as human beings. No one went and checked on him, no one tried to resuscitate him. Nothing. They walked around, went about their business and made up lies to cover up the murder they just committed. That’s not right and they should be in prison for that.”

He also told reporters that he will donate $100,000 a month for the next 10 months and will set-up a web site where the public can track how the money is spent. Kaepernick intends to donate the first $1 million of his salary this season toward combating and raising awareness about social injustice and police brutality.
