Marc Jacobs Apologizes For Dreadlocks Comment During NYFW Show

marc jacobs dreadlocks*Marc Jacobs has apologized for his choice of words following criticism over the models he used during his latest runway show at New York Fashion Week last Thursday.

A-list models Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, Gigi Hadid and Irina Shayk sported multicolored dreadlocks, leading critics to accuse Jacobs of “cultural appropriation.”

The fashion designer took to Instagram to post a now deleted explanation about how he does not “see color or race—I see people.” He also added: “All who cry ‘cultural appropriation’ or whatever nonsense about any race or skin color wearing their hair in any particular style or manner—funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair.”

Welp, Marc gon’ learn today that criticizing black woman for how they style their hair is never the wisest move. So after marinating on the backlash for a few nights, Jacobs returned to social media to issue an apology.

Captioning a text photo reading, “I have read your comments …” Jacobs wrote on his Instagram page on Sunday, September 18:

“… and I thank you for expressing your feelings. I apologize for the lack of sensitivity unintentionally expressed by my brevity. I wholeheartedly believe in freedom of speech and freedom to express oneself though art, clothes, words, hair, music … EVERYTHING. Of course I do “see” color but I DO NOT discriminate. THAT IS A FACT! Please continue to express your feelings freely but do it kindly. Nothing is gained from spreading hate by name calling and bullying.”
