PBS’s ‘Frontline’: Trump is Running for President Because Obama Mocked Him at 2011 WHCD

*Omarosa Manigault and others in an upcoming PBS documentary say that GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump is running for president out of a deep desire for revenge against President Obama, after POTUS relentlessly mocked him to his face – and in front of a national television audience – at the 2011 White House Correspondents Association Dinner.

“Every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump. It’s everyone who’s ever doubted Donald, whoever disagreed, whoever challenged him — it is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe,” Omarosa says in PBS’s “Frontline” special “The Choice 2016,” airing Tuesday (check local listings for times).

The former contestant on Trump’s “The Apprentice” – and current director of African-American outreach for his campaign – was referring to the 2011 WHCD, in which President Obama finally got to clap back about Trump and his “birther” nonsense as the business mogul was considering a 2012 run for the White House.

“He was being treated like a piñata by the President of the United States and I think he felt humiliated,” said The New Yorker editor David Remnick, who was sitting two tables away from Trump that night.

“Trump was steaming. His face was all locked in. He was not having a good time.” Remnick said.

“It just kept going and going,” added Omarosa. “He just kept hammering him and I thought, ‘Oh, Barack Obama is starting something that I don’t know if he’ll be able to finish.’”

“Donald dreads humiliation and he dreads shame, and this is why he often attempts to humiliate and shame other people,” said Michael D’Antonio, author of The Truth About Trump. “So in the case of the president ridiculing him, I think this was intolerable for Donald Trump.”

“I think that is the night he resolves to run for president,” said Trump’s political advisor Roger Stone. “I think that he is kind of motivated by it.”

“The Choice 2016” drills deep into that particular night in 2011, which apparently started Trump’s quest for the ultimate revenge.

Read more details about the special below:

“Both Clinton and Trump have been public figures for most of their lives — in fact, they’ve been active in public life on television for decades,” says Kirk. “But we’ve undertaken the most ambitious television biographies of these candidates ever created, going beyond the headlines they’ve generated and the personas they’ve created to explore what has made them who they are as people and as politicians.”

From their childhoods, to their college experiences, to their tumultuous careers, The Choice 2016 investigates formative moments in the lives of Donald Trump, who has challenged the establishment at every turn, and Hillary Clinton, who has become the first female presidential nominee.

“Both candidates have high unfavorability ratings, and the bitter divide in this country makes it incredibly hard for people to understand how others could support the candidate on the opposite side,” says Kirk. “After watching The Choice 2016, no matter where your allegiance lies, you’ll come away with a new and richer understanding of who the opposing candidates are, and how and why he or she has reached this point.”

In the runup to the premiere of The Choice 2016, FRONTLINE will also debut a series of documentary shorts on its digital platforms taking viewers inside key moments in each candidate’s life. Together, the documentary and these short films will provide fresh, revelatory portraits, spanning decades, that will give viewers a new understanding of the two people who are fighting to lead America – and will be essential viewing for every American looking to make an informed choice on November 8, 2016.

The Choice 2016 premieres Tuesday, September 27, at 9/8c on PBS (check local listings) and will stream in full, for free, online at pbs.org/frontline.
