This is Different: Mary J. Blige Does Awkward Interview with Hillary Clinton (WATCH)

*On the heels of Hillary Clinton‘s winning performance over Donald Trump Monday night (09-26-16) in the first presidential debate, comes something that can only be described as “different.” Some would call it straight up awkward or bizarre. What it is … is Mary J. Blige sitting next to the democratic presidential nominee and singing at her as you can see in the video above.

It’s for Blige’s new show for Apple Music, the streaming service. And you might not be surprised to find out the new project is titled “The 411.” We can only presume it’s a reference to Mary J’s debut album “What’s the 411?” which is scheduled to debut on September 30 and promises to show both Blige and Clinton “as you’ve never seen them before.” That’s an understatement.

In the clip, Blige covers race, police brutality, and identity in America during her impromptu singsong. Yes, the topics she covers are weighty and worthy, but we have to admit, it comes off a bit on the awkward side. That’s because it’s primarily an interview setup and Blige is sitting next to Hillary, who, for her part, stays stoic in the face of the strangeness. Meanwhile, Miss Mary keeps her eyes shut as she serenades Clinton.

Fortunately the encounter between the two isn’t all “different.” A second clip shows Blige straight asking questions the traditional way, but it still looks like one of the more awkward interview sessions ever filmed. Even though Blige asks questions in the videos, but they’re cut off before Clinton can answer, a tactic that should drive anticipation for the actual show, but the whole production only makes the Democratic candidate look strangely reticent and exasperated.

Who knows. Maybe she was. Who the heck is used to being interviewed by the singsong approach? But we have to admit, this “different-ness” has certainly got our attention and we’re looking forward to finding out how it all plays out on September 30.
