Kerry Washington Takes to Twitter to Address Police Killing and New Baby

It appears that actress/activist Kerry Washington was in her feelings over the weekend. That’s because on Saturday afternoon (10-22-16), Washington opened up on Twitter to get a few things off of her chest.

First off, the “Scandal” star acknowledged the love that she and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha received on Twitter following the birth of their second child.

“I saw all your very kind & thoughtful congratulatory tweets,” said Washington. “So yeah ? we thank you. Xo.”

But her heart was heavy as her messages diverted away from her family life to address the recent police shooting of Deborah Danner. If you don’t know, Danner was a 66-year-old black woman from the Bronx who had been battling with schizophrenia for over three decades and was killed by an officer in her apartment.

According to the New York Daily News, a neighbor who lived in Danner’s apartment building called police Tuesday to report that she was acting “in an irrational manner.” When police arrived, they reportedly found Danner holding a pair of scissors and threatening police, but one of the officers, Sgt. Hugh Barry was able to convince Danner to drop them.

Shortly after though, Danner allegedly grabbed a baseball bat and “lunged” at him, at which point Barry, an eight-year veteran of the New York Police Department, shot her twice in the torso. She later died from her injuries.

Washington added that Danner’s death was even more impactful since she was killed in the community where she was raised.

“So when I #sayhername, my heart aches,” wrote Washington. “For lives lost and for the lives we must protect. For the humanity we must work to illuminate and preserve and affirm. #BLM“

Washington wrapped up her message by advising her followers to go see the movie “Moonlight.” She called the film, “artful food for your soul … at a time when so many of us need to be lovingly nourished.”

As we reported, Washington and her husband welcomed their son into the world on October 5. They are also parents to their two-year-old daughter, Isabelle.
