*Now we know more about why Michael “Bass” McCary is not in Boyz II Men. Over the weekend on “Iyanla: Fix My Life” the singer let the world know why.
For years we’ve been told that he has been suffering from a back/spinal condition known as scoliosis and that might be true. But the bigger story is that at the age of 22, McCary says he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which affects the brain and spinal cord.
“When I first saw of the ailments start to happen, it was like little back spasms at first, and it would get stronger and stronger,” McCary, 44, said on Iyanla Vanzant’s show. “Once I was about 22, it started going full scale.”
With his health in jeopardy, McCary became extremely concerned by what doctors were telling him about his condition.
“They were saying that I have a nerve around the sciatica that was locked in place that could sever if I stepped wrong,” he says. “It’s a possibility that you could be paralyzed.”

According to McCary, it was that diagnosis that changed the dynamics between he and the other members of Boyz II Men. He said that after he left the group in 2003, Nathan and Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman “abandoned” him and chose to go on without him.
“I want to get over the hurt and abandonment that I feel from the group that I’ve been with for so long and gave my life to,” he said. “I want to be able to go in a room with them and not feel like I want to choke them.”
It’s more than obvious these guys are not on the same page. Just this past month Wanya Morris appeared on Oprah: Where Are They Now, and characterized McCary’s health issues as simply “back issues.”
“One of the problems was he had a back issue,” said Morris. “It could have been fixed; instead, he stopped coming to work and we had to move forward without him—and he wasn’t happy about that.”
Meanwhile, Vanzant says that by speaking the truth now, McCary can begin to heal the other part of himself that needs care. “His openness here today shows his willingness to fix his heart,” she says.
