Michelle Obama: First Lady Receives Thank-you Notes For T Magazine

Michelle Obama

*First Lady Michelle Obama stuns on the cover of The New York Times Style Magazine – A/K/A “T Magazine” – for its “Greats” issue, in which she also received thank-you notes from some of the country’s most notable men and women who describe how she “quietly and confidently” changed the “course of American history.”

Obama is one of seven figures who grace the special Oct. 23 edition of The New York Times’ style magazine, T. The cover stars also include Lady Gaga, Junya Watanabe, Zadie Smith and William Eggleston, who are touted as “The Greats” who are redefining our culture.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jon Meacham, Gloria Steinem and Rashida Jones each penned love letters to Mrs. Obama, all of which highlight her historic run as First Lady, Vibe.com notes.

“Because [Obama] said what she thought, and because she smiled only when she felt like smiling, and not constantly and vacuously, America’s cheapest caricature was cast on her: the Angry Black Woman,” wrote Adichie. “Women, in general, are not permitted anger — but from black American women, there is an added expectation of interminable gratitude, the closer to groveling the better, as though their citizenship is a phenomenon that they cannot take for granted.”

Gloria Steinem also offers up ideas about what Mrs. Obama may do after her time in the White House comes to an end.

“She could do anything, from becoming a U.S. senator from Illinois to campaigning for the safety and education of girls globally,” she said. ‘She could also choose to lead a private life. Whatever she decides, I trust her judgment.”

Read all of the love letters here, they’re definitely worth the full read.
