*Academy Award-nominated actor Eddie Murphy was honored with the “Hollywood Career Achievement Award” at the 20th Annual “Hollywood Film Awards” where he received a rousing standing ovation. The event was held earlier this month at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

From winning over audiences on “Saturday Night Live” to breaking box office records in beloved films like “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Shrek,” Murphy earned the award for his past, present, and continued success in the entertainment industry. His latest feature is the critically-acclaimed “Mr. Church,” a drama based on the real life story of a man hired to cook for a dying woman and her young daughter.

“Eddie Murphy has had a spectacular career as a comedian, actor, writer, producer and director, spanning more than 35 years,” said Allen Shapiro, CEO of Dick Clark Productions before the event. “We look forward to honoring his extraordinary body of work.”

Murphy is the most commercially successful African-American actor in the history of the motion picture business, and is one of the industry’s top-five box-office performers overall. He is on the very short list of actors who have starred in multiple $100 million pictures over the past three decades.

In 1989, Murphy made his directorial debut with “Harlem Nights,” and in 2007, he received rave reviews and critical acclaim for his portrayal of James “Thunder” Early in the Dreamworks film “Dreamgirls,” a performance which would garner him the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture as well as earning him his first Academy Award nomination in the same category.

The untelevised program was mocked for its perceived second-tier status and lack of competition (winners were announced before the awards began). Many of the films and performances which took home trophies have not been released in theaters, and the process by which honorees are chosen is a mystery.

“If you haven’t won an award tonight and you’re here, you should fire your publicist,” HFA host James Corden told the star-studded audience as he kicked off the show.

The Hollywood Film Awards ceremony, celebrating its 20th anniversary as the official launch of the awards season, will be hosted by actor and comedian James Corden. Past honorees of the award include Robert De Niro, Glenn Close, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Keaton, and Robin Williams.
