*Brandy accepted the coveted Lady of Soul Award from Jill Scott during the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards, which took place Sunday (Nov 6) at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Teddy Riley also received a special honor during the ceremony packed with spirited performances from the likes of D.R.A.M., Anderson .Paak, BJ the Chicago Kid, India.Arie, Yuna, Ro James and Eric Benét.
After receiving her Lady of Soul Award, Brandy ran through a medley of her hits, including “Almost Doesn’t Count,” “Full Moon,” “The Boy Is Mine” and “Sitting on Top of the World” joined by MA$E. Paying tribute to the singer via video were Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jazmine Sullivan, Jhené Aiko and others.
Additional highlights from the evening included host Erykah Badu glowing in the dark and riffing on such topics as Donald Trump and alien life in her opening monologue. “The future is black; forget the Jetsons,” declared the singer. “It’ll be more like the Jeffersons.”
Badu also joined D.R.A.M. for their new single “WiFi,” as well as India.Arie on the message-driven song “Breathe.”
Legend Award honoree Teddy Riley celebrated onstage with Bobby Brown, Doug E. Fresh, Guy, Wreckx-N-Effect, V. Bozeman and Tito Jackson. The three-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer/singer accepted his award from Cedric the Entertainer.
The show’s second annual “Soul Cypher” featured Tyrese, Ne-Yo, Angie Stone and the legendary Gladys Knight with Robert Glasper on keyboards and Badu returning as DJ.
Dru Hill kicked off the evening with a medley of their 90s jams “Tell Me,” “In My Bed” and “Beauty,” followed by frontman Sisqo performing his solo hit “Thong Song.” Turning in additional performances were Carl Thomas, MAJOR and Candice Boyd.
The Soul Train Awards is set to premiere Nov. 27 on Centric and BET (8 p.m. ET)
