Kelly Price On Her Grandmother’s Influence & Singing Through Her Pain

Kelly Price

*Singer Kelly Price recently spoke to Essence about the pain she’s endured the past few years, and how she’s turning that pain into new music, and the importance of family, most especially during those dark days.

The six-time Grammy-nominated singer is planning to drop a new album in 2017. “I have some incredible new music coming,” she teased, referencing her sister’s death and her own divorce. “I’ve gone through a lot of new changes, career and personal. The music will reflect that. Too Fat For Fame is coming in 2017 and there’s the possibility of a docu-series with my family. I’m working on a memoir, there’s a lot. And, I recently just joined the cast of For Colored Girls with Angie Stone and Robin Givens.”

Earlier this year Kelly took to Instagram to explain how her sister’s death motivated her to lose weight. She wrote:

This is hard to post and hard to look at. I lost my sister in 2014 and was depressed and didn’t want to acknowledge it but it showed up on my body and I packed on weight that I hadn’t carried in years. I lost focus, lost perspective and gained bad habits and extra pounds. I looked up exactly one year later after she died and the photo on the left was what I looked like. This was me in April of this year on stage in Chicago. I told my audience I’d lost my way but I was getting ready to change my life.

She also explained to Essence that staying busy and strong is a strength she learned from her grandmother, who at 91 years old, continues to inspire her every day.

“I look at her and her strength has always been amazing. To be born in the time she was born in and pursue a college education,” Price said. “And everyone in my family who is musical is musical because of her, she was a musician. She plays the piano and organ, she sings incredibly. She’s four foot ten, but when she opens her mouth she sounds like a trumpet, and so she was my earliest influence with everything. Whether it’s my faith in God or music.”

The proud mom gushes about how her family’s musical genes also got passed down to her children.

“My baby girl sings, my son sings, my oldest doesn’t, but she has more an administrative mind,” she said, before revealing that her son recently auditioned for the ABC show “How To Get Away With Murder” and received a callback.
