*Ezra Edelman’s film “O.J.: Made in America” won four prizes at the first annual Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards on Thursday night, while Ava DuVernay’s “13th” won best documentary and best director in the TV/streaming categories, as well as best political documentary.

DuVernay’s exploration of racial inequality in the criminal justice system opened the New York Film Festival in late September and debuted on Netflix day-and-date with its theatrical run. The film explores the history of race relations through the prism of prisons and the preponderance of young black and Latino men who make up a large part of their populations.

“O.J. Made in America” was the top winner, earning honors for best documentary and best director (theatrical feature), best sports documentary, and best limited documentary series.

The multi-part ESPN miniseries got a minimal theatrical release to qualify for awards season. At TCA in May, the filmmaker described the project as “also a story about the city of Los Angeles and race going back to the ’50s and ’60s.”

Penn Jillette hosted the ceremony, which honored films chosen by the Broadcast Film Critics’ Association (BFCA) and Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA).

Nominees were announced last month.
