*Speaking to a large crowd of University of Michigan students, faculty and administrators on Wednesday (11-17-16) about his long career as a civil rights activist, the Rev. Jesse Jackson called for President Obama to pardon to Hillary Clinton before he leaves office, just like President Ford did for Richard Nixon.

Jackson remarked, “It would be a monumental, moral, and political mistake to pursue the prosecution of Hillary Clinton,” The Hill reports. “Secretary Clinton has not been legally accused, indicted, tried or convicted of anything.”

Jackson referenced President Gerald Ford’s decision to pardon President Richard Nixon in 1974. After resigning as president, Nixon dodged impeachment on charges of obstruction of justice in the Watergate scandal.

“President Obama should follow President Ford’s example and offer a preemptive full pardon,” Jackson said. referencing the famous U-M alumnus. “President Ford said we don’t need him for trophy. We need to move on. President Nixon wasn’t convicted of a crime. He didn’t apply for a pardon. [Ford] did it because he thought it would be best for the country,” Jackson said.

He added, “Hillary Clinton has not been tried, but there are those who want to drag her for the next three years. It will not stop until they find a reason to put her in jail. That would be a travesty.”

Jackson’s long day in Ann Arbor included him dropping in on an anti-Trump rally held by students on campus. Students “are growing up in an America that is in an identity crisis,” Jesse said. “These demonstrations are born out of fear. Fear that the Klan will ride again. Fear that violence (against minorities) is coming back. In this election, voters voted for fear. I think hope will defeat hate, but it’s a battle.”
