Danny Glover Partners to Celebrate the ‘Female Spirit’

*Danny Glover and Something Positive Inc., the leading Afro-Caribbean performing company in the United States have partnered to mount The Iconography Series: Celebrating the Female Spirit – Cheryl Byron, the exhibition that celebrates icons of the local cultural community.

The exhibition will be on view from December 6 through January 1, 2017, at the Brooklyn Public Library Caribbean Literary & Cultural Center (22 Linden Boulevard @ Flatbush Avenue).

The exhibition features multiple costumes, accessories, and textiles from the 40-year career of the late Rapso music pioneer and founder of Something Positive, Cheryl Byron.

The Iconography Series is a public art and education project of Something Positive, Inc. The exhibition is made possible with generous support from Danny Glover, Asake Bomani, Mandisa Glover, Materials for the Arts, New York City Council Member Mathieu Eugene, Maxine Alexander, and the Brooklyn Public Library Caribbean Literary & Cultural Center.

“Cheryl Byron was my treasured friend and is part of my eclectic experience, my memory,” said Danny Glover. “She was a manifestation of art before anything else. Art is the celebration of the simplest expressions of people’s lives, dreams, desires, love and pain.”

Shaun Rasmussen, Something Positive’s Associate Director, added “though this exhibition highlights Cheryl Byron, we further envisioned it as a celebration of female strength, warmth, and authenticity. Celebrating the Female Spirit is the first of a five-part series, and we’re thrilled about this installment.”

Something Positive is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit Performing Arts Company dedicated to preserving the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and its cross-cultural influences. Established by Cheryl Byron in 1981, the ensemble has performed its original repertoire nationally and internationally.

Heralded for its unique blend of education and entertainment, Something Positive continues to gather resources to institutionalize the artistic work of the African, American and Caribbean collective. The company regularly conducts arts education workshops at public schools and community centers in the New York City area.

In celebration of the exhibition, a reception open to the public will take place on Tuesday, December 6, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the library branch.
