*It looks like Denzel Washington has another hit on his hands. This weekend, his Paramount Pictures’ released drama “Fences” made an estimated $128,000 from four locations in New York and Los Angeles.
The results were so good that the film, directed by Washington, posted a per screen average of $32,000, second only to Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” — which topped the overall box office with $155 million and had an estimated per screen average of $37,287, according to TheWrap.
In the late August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, Washington also stars as Troy Maxson, a 1950s sanitation worker in Pittsburgh who struggles to be a good father and husband after his lost dream of joining the major leagues just won’t let him be.
“Fences” also stars Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and newcomer Saniyya Sidney, who was profiled on EUR, here.
Washington and Davis won Tony Awards for playing the same roles in the 2010 Broadway revival.
Look for “Fences” to open through out the US and North America on Christmas Day.

While things are looking up for “Fences” and Denzel, the picture is not quite the same for Will Smith and his latest release, “Collateral Beauty.”
To put it bluntly, it’s another bomb for Smith.
In its nationwide debut weekend, “Beauty” only brought in $7 million. The film represents another not so good look for Smith when you count his box-office disappointments such as 2013’s “After Earth” and last year’s crime dramedy “Focus,” “Beauty” is another unattractive result in the actor’s resume that has grown worryingly heavy with more misses than hits reminds TheWrap.
“Collateral Beauty” revolves around a New York executive (Smith) who retreats from his life after suffering a great personal tragedy. He later seeks answers from the universe on the topics of Love, Death and Time.
It has a not-so-pretty 14 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, though an A- CinemaScore (awarded by those surveyed on opening night) could keep it from flatlining in the weeks to come.
Its estimated $7 million from 3,028 locations came in at nearly half of initial estimates of $12 million from both trackers and distributors at Warner Bros. — accentuating the severity of the box office misfire.
Having said the foregoing, you really don’t need to worry about M r. Smith’s Hollywood career tanking anytime soon. The former rapper and TV star has three films due to be released soon, including two “Bad Boys” sequels with Martin Lawrence.
