*Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson and other civil rights leaders TODAY, Monday, December 5 at 3pm Pacific, is calling on L.A. County DA Jackie Lacey to issue a report card on its office’s prosecution of police use of deadly force cases.
The call comes in the wake of Lacey’s office disclosure that there will be no prosecution in the slaying of Leundeu Keunang. Also, despite a recommendation by LAPD Chief Beck and the call by civil rights groups, Lacey’s office has still not filed charges in the slaying of Brendon Glenn against LAPD officer Clifford Proctor.
“The near total absence of prosecutions by the L.A. County District Attorney’s office in deadly force cases has been a constant and disturbing pattern since 2000,” says Hutchinson. “A District Attorney’s Report Card on deadly force cases would give the public a transparent record of the DA’s office handling of cases of use of deadly force by local police officers and what its rationale is for not filing charges in nearly all of these cases. This would a be a major step toward full transparency and accountability by the DA in questionable uses of deadly force by police officers.”
