If you are a real boxing fan, then you had to enjoy watching what went down Saturday night at the Galen Center on the USC campus.

And if you thought that Richard Shaeffer was out of the picture in the sport then you must have missed what went down this weekend. His newly formed Ring Star Sports put on several exciting bouts in association with TGB Promotions in a big night of boxing that was telecast live on Showtime Championship Boxing.

Of the eight bouts that took place this weekend it was fight with Jesus Cuellar defending his WBA featherweight title in the main event against a game Abner Mares who was in a must win situation after having a layoff for about a year.

This was indeed his chance to prove that he still had a lot of fight left after that loss against Leo Santa Cruz a while back.

He got in the ring Saturday night with grit and determination and fought a smart fight for twelve grueling rounds against a tough and rugged Cuellar who hails out of Argentina and looked to be the larger, and stronger fighter than Mares in size and weight going into this one. One would have thought that Mares didn’t have a chance against this guy, but he proved everyone wrong sitting ringside by dropping Cuellar in the later rounds with a solid punch to the kisser

And at the end of twelve competitive rounds, Mares was awarded a majority decision win and declared the new WBA featherweight champion.

After being trained by Robert Garcia, he now says that he’s ready to fight anyone that’s available. There was a remarkable difference in the way he fought compared to previous bouts. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.

And in the semi-main event it was Jhermall Charlo defending his IBF junior middleweight title against Julian Williams that also got the attention of everyone ringside.

This one got off to a good start in the opening bell but as things got going you could see where this was heading as Charlo slowly but surely began to connect against Williams who although was very skillful, seemed to be stymied by the strength and power of Charlo who dropped him in the second, and again in the fifth with the referee calling a halt to the bout at two minutes and six seconds.

Charlo now says that he’s considering moving up in weight to 160 lbs to possibly fight Daniel Jacobs, or “GGG” Gennady Golovkin. In the meantime his twin brother Jhermell is in the wings and could make a good match with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. We’ll see if that happens.

The Charlo twins are formidable opponents for any of those guys in that weight division. Maybe they’ll do it in L.A. at the Galen Center on the USC campus a great place for boxing.
