The Socialist’s Journal: Milo Yiannopoulous

Brookins Head Shot

*In the world of conservative bubbles and liberal echo chambers, in the world of the President alleging that news organizations are offering “fake news,” there is a ray of hope.

Based on videos that have leaked out on the internet, Milo Yiannopoulous believes teenage boys could benefit from sexual relationships with adult men. The ray of hope is that conservatives, almost universally, have denounced his statement and apparent perspective on this matter.

Even as many conservatives have embraced the idea of alternative facts and fake news, Yiannopoulous’ statement prompted staffers at Breitbart (where he is a senior editor) to state that they would resign if he stayed on. This illustrates a clear contradiction of closing ranks around one of the leaders of conservatism.

Furthermore the organizers of CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference, basically a meeting of right wing thinkers and activists have disinvited Yiannopoulous from their upcoming event. It is heartening to see that even though conservatives are not very understanding about alternative sexualities, they can agree with liberals that it is a bad idea for adults to target children for sexual relationships.

Yiannopoulous has come out and repudiated the reports claiming that the video was edited to make him look bad. But that doesn’t matter to me. The bottom line is that given the idea of pedophilia, conservatives reject one of their poster boys.

This doesn’t mean we should resist the conservative agenda any less stringently. But it does mean there is a common ground to work from.
