*Who knew that Yvette Nicole Brown was into cosplay – so much so that Syfy recruited her to host its new competition series “Cosplay Melee.”

Premiering tonight (March 21), the show features innovative cosplayers as they transform themselves into creations inspired by pop culture and iconic science fiction for a chance to pocket $10,000.

Cosplay is short for “costume playing,” (like the people who dress up as characters to go to Comic-con).

“We’re looking for the greatest cosplayer of a particular genre every week, so it might be a space opera like ‘Star Wars’ or ‘Star Trek.’ It might be anime, it might be superheroes,” Brown told us. “The first challenge is to create an accessory – a headdress, a sword, a shield – and then we eliminate one person. The [others] have to go back and create an entire costume and character that goes with that one [accessory] they already made, and then they have to come out and perform it, and the best one wins.”

The panel of judges includes world class cosplayer LeeAnna Vamp and A-list costume creator, Christian Beckman.

Fans and followers of Brown already know she is proud to be “the biggest nerd there is” as well as a bona fide “fangirl,” which becomes quite apparent during her frequent appearances on AMC’s “Talking Dead,” the after show for “The Walking Dead.”

But cosplay though?

Below, Brown explains how this happened:
