NBC’s ‘The Carmichael Show’: Series In Renewal Limbo As Cast Options Are Set To Expire

cast in limbo*Jerrod Carmichael’s half-hour NBC comedy “The Carmichael Show” is reportedly in limbo at NBC.

As the series awaits news of renewal, the options for the actors are set to expire June 30, so things aren’t looking very clear.

According to Deadline, “the leading studio on the show, 20th TV, which produces with Universal TV, and Legendary TV/ABC Studios, will have to pick up the options on the actors in order for the series to return.”

The entertainment news site also notes that the show “scored a dramatic 11-hour renewal last year, with a deal coming after NBC had announced its fall schedule and its executive had faced questions about the show’s uncertain future.”

Though the series is now in its third season, it was supposed to air in early 2017 but did not return until May 31.

“The Carmichael Show” was was co-created by Carmichael, and follows a fictional version of his family. The multi-camera show is set in Charlotte, North Carolina and stars Carmichael as himself, Lil Rel Howery, Tiffany Haddish, Loretta Devine, and David Alan Grier.

The series has tackled a wide range of topics including the N-word, consent and Donald Trump. Last week, NBC pulled the plug on an episode dealing with shootings on the heels of two real-life mass shootings in the U.S.

Carmichael called the move “criminal.”

Jet magazine reports that if NBC does decide to pull the plug on the series, “20th TV has quietly sent out feelers to other networks to gauge interest — just in case NBC opts to cancel.”

Carmichael began developing and executive producing the series in November 2014, partly based on his real life as a stand-up comic. On March 10, 2015, NBC ordered the pilot to series.
