*No bond has been set for the Ohio man accused of plowing his car into counter-protesters at the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

At a bond hearing this morning, James Alex Fields Jr., 20, made his first court appearance via closed circuit TV from the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he has been held since being charged on Saturday with second-degree murder and other counts. Authorities say he drove into the crowd, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others.

According to CNN, the “no bond” decision had to do with a delay in securing a public defender for Fields. A relative of someone from the public defender’s office was reportedly a victim of the violence that erupted in Charlottesville and would present a conflict of interest. As a result, the judge had to go through a different list of public defenders to assign one for this case.

The next bond hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 25.

The FBI and Department of Justice have opened a federal civil rights and hate crime investigation into the killing of Heyer.
