Roland Martin Declares Trump’s Defense of White Supremacy is ‘A Declaration of War’

*Today (Wednesday/08-16-17) on News One Now, host and managing editor Roland Martin declared that he would not be an idle spectator to the events unfolding in our country.

At a press conference held at Trump Tower yesterday that was originally supposed to focuses on an infrastructure executive order he had signed, the President ended up speaking more about his defense of Charlottesville. He continued reiterating his opinion that the blame of the upheaval was on both white supremacists and counter-protestors. On the subject of removing confederate statues, Trump mockingly questioned if statues of the first president of the United States, George Washington, should be removed, because Washington owned slaves. Trump’s defense and overall racial bias led to the delivery of this statement from Martin during his simulcast with the Tom Joyner Morning Show:

“This is a president who has no shame. He is an immoral leader. What this man has done by aligning himself with neo-Nazis and with white supremacists is shameful and should not go unchecked. But it’s not just a question of going unchecked- we must do more than simply tweet and comment on Facebook. This is a challenge – this is a declaration of war. For 398 years black folks have been fighting for this county to insure that it lives up to its ideals – for 398 years we’ve made it perfectly clear that we’re not going to sit idly by an d allow ourselves to be embarrassed and run over and shamed by white supremacists,” said Martin, who noted that the president has not even called the family of Heather Heyer, who was run over by a car and killed in the aftermath of Saturday’s protests.

“This is a moment where we don’t need anybody else to speak for us. We can speak with clarity and with precision as to exactly what is required of us. It means that when it comes to the ballot box I don’t care who you are – I don’t want to hear anybody say my vote does not matter because when you see a white supremacist at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, that’s all the proof you need to show that [your] vote does indeed matter. This is not a Black thing or a Hispanic thing or an Asian thing – it’s a consciousness thing. This is a battle for the soul of America, and like the Tuskegee Airmen said we will fight to the last hour to the last minute to the last second. We will fight, fight, fight.”

Martin also spoke with founder and president of the Urban Conservative Project Liz Copeland and Howard University African American Studies department chair Greg Carr, Ph.D. about Trump’s remarks. Copeland, a republican, publicly expressed that she regretted voting for him.

“I think there are millions of republicans who are waking up today and saying this is not about partisanship, this is not about politics – this is about this man’s character and his inability or unwillingness to denounce quickly white supremacists as ‘fine people’ or to normalize their behavior because they don’t have jobs, or to equate them to anti-fascist movements. We’re talking about people on the alt-right side of Charlottesville who want to ethnically cleanse our country. Our democracy is at risk here and I’m so saddened that he got my vote,” said Copeland.

Carr said that no individual should be surprised by his viewpoint.

“This was a primal scream, and it was loud and it was obvious from a man who never wanted to be president. The other story is the silence – not only of a political party, but of a cultural impulse in this country that has fed this beast, and now they want to distance themselves from their cousins when in fact this is a much larger thing than about neo-Nazis  and confederates. This is about white supremacy, which is a systemic issue. Donald Trump didn’t go off the rails yesterday – he was right on point and right on cue. This is exactly who he has been,” said Carr.
